Montsonis Medieval Village - An exclusive setting for birdspotting

Montsec Range Itinerary -
Montsec d'Ares

Starting point: Àger
Time: 2 to 4 hours.

Approaching Àger from Balaguer turn left off the road by the cemetery and follow this road to the top of the range. You should make regular stops along the way at suitable locations to locate the birds of the lower field margins (Cirl Bunting, Bee-eater, Wood Lark, Quail, Hoopoe and European Nightjar), the evergreen oak scrub (Firecrest, Subalpine Warbler, Bonelli's Warbler) and the mosaic of scrub, rocky areas and field edges at the middle latitudes (Orphean Warbler, Ortolan Bunting, Rock Bunting, Dartford Warbler, Tawny Pipit).

The views from the top of the range are stunning and invite one to walk. The easiest option is to continue to the east past the hang-glider launching point. The area to the west of the observatory is also interesting and offers splendid views of the reservoirs to the south, but the more uneven terrain makes the walk more strenuous. Look out for Rock Thrush, Red-billed Chough, Alpine Chough, Griffon Vulture, Peregrine Falcon, Golden Eagle, Lammergeier and Red-backed Shrike. Alpine Accentors occur in small numbers in the winter months.

From here it is possible to continue on over the range to Sant Esteve de la Sarga and pay a visit to the Mont-rebei gorge.
