The Monegros Itinerary 2/2 -
Alcloea to Candasnos

Return to the road and head towards Candasnos. One option is to visit the Basal, off the road to Ballobar, which is the next junction you encounter on the left. Those with limited time however should continue to Candasnos. At the junction in this village turn right and shortly after turn left to follow the road to Caspe. Less than a kilometre along this road there is a stop sign and a low farm building on the right. Turn onto this track and follow it to the Candasnos lagoon.

This is a small lake that can be full of birds, including Black-necked Grebe and Red-crested Pochard. Marsh Harriers are numerous and at migration times it is fairly normal to see Garganey, Whiskered Tern, Black Tern, Hobby and Osprey. The reeds hold Penduline Tit, Great Reed Warbler and occasionally Little Bittern.

To finish there is another opportunity of seeing steppeland birds by continuing eastwards from Candasnos along the N-II to the top of the first rise, and by then turning off the road onto the first track that the traffic lets you take. Search the area between the N-II and the motorway.
