S'Albufera Natural Park Itinerary

On the northern edge of the main canal a tree-lined path leads off to the right A tree-lined path to the Bishop hides in the S'Albufera Natural Park.. Follow this (look out for migrant passerines) and you will son reach the Bishop I hide.

The view from the Bishop I hide in the S'Albufera reserve.

This is probably the best site on the reserve for waders – Kentish Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Black-winged Stilt, Spotted Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, stints, etc. In the spring it is also worth keeping an eye out for Collared Pratincole and Red-rumped Swallow in flight.

Other hides or observation points (Bishop II, Watkinson hide, tower hide, etc) overlook different parts of the reserve, use the reserve map for further details if you have more time to spend on the reserve.

Before returning to the car take the short walk by crossing the road at the park entrance and following the canal down to the beach Audouin's Gulls are usually seen around the nearby beach and breakwaters., where it is usually possible to spot an Audouin's Gull or two. Back in the vehicle follow the C-712 down to the Can Picafort roundabout. Turn right and immediately go straight ahead at the next roundabout. After 1 kilometre turn right alongside the coach depot and follow this narrow road almost to its end.

Although earmarked for development as a golf course currently the rough area on the right hand side of the road is good for orchids, migrant birds such as wheatears, pipits, Redstart and Woodchat Shrike, Bee-eater, Hoopoe and Short-toed Lark. On the left you will eventually encounter a fenced off area and an old rusty "no entry" sign (ignore it). Turn left here and follow this grassy track along the edge of the depuradora to an observation tower.

The new observation tower overlooking the depuradora (waterworks).

This tower offers good views over the concrete-banked lagoons of the waterworks A view of the depuradora from the observation tower. An interesting birding site for ducks, waders, migratory terns, etc., agricultural fields and part of the reedbeds of the S'Albufera. On or around the lagoons you may encounter a variety of ducks including Shelduck and Red-crested Pochard, Yellow Wagtail, Green Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Little Ringed Plover and other waders, gulls and migratory marsh terns. Hoopoe and Stone Curlew may be seen on the nearby fields, while the reedbed inhabitants include Marsh Harrier, Purple Gallinule, Fan-tailed Warbler, Great Reed Warbler and Cetti's Warbler. It is worth watching the skies for hirundines and raptors and also to bear in mind that this spot has turned up more than its share of island rarities over the years.
