Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, Cortalet Itinerary 2/2

Access to parts of the beach is closed to prevent disturbance to breeding birds from 1st April to 15th June, so within this period the option is to head back to Cortalet. From here you can either continue on foot along the well-signed path, or return to the car and drive to the Matà area, a few kilometres before reaching Sant Pere Pescador.

If you decide to follow on foot you will pass through the closes, where Bee-eater and at times Roller or Great Spotted Cuckoo can be seen. Further on you reach the series of hides overlooking reedbeds and brackish lagoons where Great Reed Warbler, Moustached Warbler, Purple Gallinule, Kingfisher and herons can be observed. The nearby ricefields of Matà can be very interesting in late April/early May and from October into the winter months, especially for migrating waders and terns.

Follow on to the beach of les Llaunes where an observation tower is well placed for seawatching (divers, grebes, auks and seaduck in the winter months), while on the beach itself you may encounter Kentish Plover, Sanderling and occasionally Greater Flamingo.

Another point of access to the reserve is via a bridge over the Muga from Empuriabrava.
