Montgrí Massif Itinerary 1/2

  1. Starting point: L'escala
  2. Time: The best part of a day

Starting at the marina in L'Escala head in the direction of Montgó, following the right fork that indicates “Punta Montgó” after approximately 1 kilometre. Go past “Camping Neus” and enter an area of pine and maquis. After approximately 4kms take the turning on left and then immediately left again to go to Punta del Milà.

From here it would be interesting to walk to the end of the track and then follow on to the Punta del Milà. Birds that could be seen on the way include Hoopoe, Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Black-eared Wheatear and perhaps the occasional Rock Sparrow. The coastline itself in the vicinity of the Punta del Milà offers an interesting array of birds which include Pallid Swift, Alpine Swift, Crag Martin, Blue Rock Thrush and Peregrine Falcon, while a short seawatch can be productive at almost any time of the year.

Make your way back to the main track, turn left and continue for about another kilometre. Here, in the vicinity of the ruined house it is possible to see Red-rumped Swallow. A little further on is the turning for Bellcaire, which is the return route, while on the left there is a stony track. It is worth stopping here and searching this area for Subalpine, Sardinian, Dartford and even Spectacled Warblers, as well as Thekla Lark and Black-eared Wheatear.

Continue, using the high points to scan for Bonelli's Eagle. Go straight ahead at the next fork to reach the Torre Ponça. This well-vegetated area is a particularly good one for spotting spring migrants, as well as for searching for the Orphean Warbler.
