Worried about its vulnerability Roger and I tried to watch it without making it a public spectacle for the &#8220;normal&#8221; tourists wandering around and looking for something to focus their attention on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/roger-purple-shot-copper.jpg\" alt=\"Purple Shot Copper butterfly, on a birding tour in Spain\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This <strong>Purple Shot Copper<\/strong> was a glorious dose of colour and pattern, and a memorable moment for us at Siurana.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/roger-rffalcon.jpg\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\" alt=\"Male Red-footed Falcon, Falco vespertinus, on a birding tour in Spain\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">On day 1 we came off the main road onto the drylands near Balaguer and the first 4 species we saw were all birds of prey: Golden Eagle, Hobby, Montagu&#8217;s Harrier and several delightful <strong>Red-footed Falcons<\/strong>. This spring there was an unusually large influx of these pretty little falcons, much to the delight of local and visiting birders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/roger-squacco.jpg\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\" alt=\"Squacco Heron in the Ebro Delta, on a birding tour in Spain.\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Bird photography is usually challenging because of the jumpiness of the subjects. Even when in a car if you stop the most usual response is for the bird to fly away. Just now and then though you can find a bird more absorbed in what it was doing, and less wary of your presence. Like this <strong>Squacco Heron<\/strong> in the <strong>Ebro Delta<\/strong>, looking for a snack in a rice paddy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/roger-swallowtail.jpg\" alt=\"Swallowtail Butterfly, on a birding tour in Spain.\" style=\"font-size: 1em; line-height: 1.3em\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A Swallowtail butterfly. Is beauty only in the eyes of the beholder?
