The Great Spotted Cuckoo\u00a0is patchily distributed in lowland areas, with some important local declines in recent years.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/great-spotted-cuckoo-map.jpg?resize=239%2C205\" alt=\"Distribution map of Great Spotted Cuckoo, Clamator glandarius\" height=\"205\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>Birding itineraries<\/strong> where it is possible to see the <strong>Great Spotted Cuckoo<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/sites-and-itineraries\/llobregat-delta-and-garraf\/birding-in-the-llobregat-delta-and-garraf.html\" title=\"Great Spotted Cuckoo itinerary Llobregat\">Llobregat delta<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/sites-and-itineraries\/drylands-of-lleida\/birding-in-drylands-of-lleida.html\" title=\"Great Spotted Cuckoo itinerary Lleida\">Drylands of Lleida<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/sites-and-itineraries\/aiguamolls-emporda\/birding-in-aiguamolls-natural-park.html\" title=\"Great Spotted Cuckoo itinerary Aiguamolls\">Aiguamolls de l&#8217;Empord\u00e0<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/sites-and-itineraries\/monegros-alcolea-and-candasnos\/birding-in-alcolea-and-candasnos-monegros.html\" title=\"Great Spotted Cuckoo itinerary Monegros\">Monegros Alcolea and Candasnos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Interestingly, we spotted no fewer than 4 juvenile Great Spotted Cuckoos, <em>Clamator glandarius<\/em>,\u00a0following a single <strong>Magpie<\/strong>, <em>Pica pica<\/em>, foster parent on the <strong>drylands of Lleida<\/strong> this June. According to the <strong>BWP<\/strong> concise edition it is normal\u00a0for the Great Spotted Cuckoo to place one egg in a particular Magpie&#8217;s nest. Similarly, there are a number of observations of 2 juveniles with a Magpie foster parent, while the BWP states that 3 is rare.\u00a0So has anyone else seen 4 <strong>juvenile Great Spotted Cuckoos<\/strong> with a single Magpie, or is this a unique observation?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Would these young birds have originated\u00a0from the same cuckoo mother or two or more different ones? Was that particular magpie a <em>soft touch<\/em>? Would all those birds survive until independence?
