Looking for <strong>Dupont&#8217;s Larks<\/strong> was going to be hard work, luckily we had taken out our own insurance policy and were staying two nights at our hotel in nearby L\u00e9cera.<\/p>\n<p>All told we had some <strong>pretty good birding<\/strong>. The highlights of one day and one morning&#8217;s birding in the plains were: Dupont&#8217;s Lark (seen on the second morning), <strong>Pin-tailed Sandgrouse<\/strong>, Black-bellied Sandgrouse,\u00a0<strong>Black Wheatear<\/strong>, Golden Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Montagu&#8217;s Harrier, Melodious Warbler, Wryneck, Tawny Pipit, <strong>Black-eared Wheatear<\/strong> and Lesser Kestrel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/lkestrelbeatblog.jpg\" alt=\"Lesser Kestrel\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Lesser Kestrel. Photo by Beat R\u00fcegger<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next stop: the steppes between Candasnos and Onti\u00f1ena. Here our\u00a0main birds were <strong>Black-necked Grebe<\/strong>, Red-crested Pochard,\u00a0Booted Eagle, Little Bustard, <strong>Spectacled Warbler<\/strong> and Thekla Lark.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bootedebeatblog.jpg\" alt=\"Booted Eagle\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Booted Eagle. Photo by Beat R\u00fcegger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then wonderful sunny weather in the <strong>Pyrenees <\/strong>just had to be shared with some special birds too. Lammergeier, <strong>Citril Finch<\/strong>, Alpine Chough, Honey Buzzard, Alpine Swift, <strong>Wryneck<\/strong>, Water Pipit and\u00a0Bonelli&#8217;s Warbler are the birds that didn&#8217;t let us down in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bonelliswbeatblog.jpg\" alt=\"Bonelli\u2019s Warbler\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Western Bonelli&#8217;s Warbler. Photo by Beat R\u00fcegger.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The next couple of days were spent in the plains and Pre-Pyrenees not far from my home town, <strong>Lleida.<\/strong> Everybody will remember the <strong>Ortolan Bunting<\/strong>, and I&#8217;m sure most will recall Rock Sparrow,\u00a0<strong>Orphean Warbler<\/strong>, Blue Rock Thrush and the\u00a0Sardinian Warbler. Sadly, I was the only one to see the female\u00a0Rock Thrush at Mont-roig.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ortolanbeatblog.jpg\" alt=\"Ortolan Bunting\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Ortolan Bunting. I should have mentioned the <strong>Bonelli&#8217;s Eagles<\/strong>, Little Bustards, Little Owls, <strong>Rollers<\/strong>, Stone Curlews and <strong>Bearded Tits<\/strong>. How forgetful I am at times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ebro Delta held up well to our scrutiny too. One of the rarer birds we saw was a handsome <strong>summer-plumaged Marsh Sandpiper<\/strong>, but there were a lot more waders to choose from. An assortment of little avian delights also included\u00a0<strong>Temminck&#8217;s Stint<\/strong>, Little Bittern, <strong>Collared Pratincole<\/strong> and Mediterranean Gull.
