{"id":270,"date":"2009-02-01T12:59:20","date_gmt":"2009-02-01T10:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/general\/kittiwake-wreck-in-wake-of-storm\/"},"modified":"2009-02-01T12:59:20","modified_gmt":"2009-02-01T10:59:20","slug":"kittiwake-wreck-in-wake-of-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/general\/kittiwake-wreck-in-wake-of-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Kittiwake wreck in wake of storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Exceptional gale force winds buffeted <strong>northern Spain<\/strong> on the 24th and 25th January, causing an unprecedented influx of <strong>Kittiwakes<\/strong> to inland <strong>Catalonia<\/strong>.\u00a0In most countries that I know <strong>inland Kittiwakes<\/strong> are a rare event (persoanlly I&#8217;ve only seen them inland once before in Kent, England, in the late 1980s).<\/p>\n<p>Well, in the last week <strong>more than 300 Kittiwakes<\/strong> have been observed on the rivers, lakes and reservoirs of inland <strong>Catalonia<\/strong>.\u00a0Many of these birds are fatigued and end up dying. Some of\u00a0them have been picked up by concerned people and taken to local wildlife recovery centres.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/sllorenc.jpg\" alt=\"Sant Lloren\u00e7 de montgai\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Sant Lloren\u00e7 de Montgai &#8211; not well known for its Kittiwake population<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One <strong>local birder<\/strong>\u00a0reported an\u00a0interesting event concerning one of those wind-driven Kittiwakes: one of a flock totalling\u00a028\u00a0was caught and eaten by a <strong>Golden Eagle<\/strong> (one of the few <strong>Golden Eagles in Spain<\/strong> with a taste for seafood it seems).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.birdinginspain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/famtrip2sep.jpg\" alt=\"British birders visiting Catalonia drylands\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Are you sure it was a Kittiwake you saw sitting with the sandgrouse?<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exceptional gale force winds buffeted northern Spain on the 24th and 25th January, causing an unprecedented influx of Kittiwakes to inland Catalonia.\u00a0In most countries that I know inland Kittiwakes are a rare event (persoanlly I&#8217;ve only seen them inland once before in Kent, England, in the late 1980s).
